A young horse stands in profile, its body a deep cobalt blue that darkens almost to black along the legs and the curve of the belly. Behind it the land breaks into flat, singing fields of colour: lemon yellow slopes, a scarlet sky, wedges of emerald green and a soft apricot ground beneath the hooves. The oil is laid on freely, brush marks left plainly visible and edges kept soft, so one colour bleeds gently into the next. The animal lowers its head a little, calm rather than restless, small against the burning hues that surround it. This is Expressionism at its warmest, an animal painted not as the eye sees it but as it is felt.
Colour set loose from description is what drives the work, in the manner of the German Expressionists and their famous blue horses. The horizontal shape reads well over a low bench in a hallway, or along a stairwell landing where a burst of colour lifts a plain wall. Cobalt, scarlet and yellow ochre spark against grey plaster, black metal and warm concrete floors, and one such work is enough for a whole room. A small horse with an enormous amount to say.
