Frog Oil Painting
Caught in profile at the very instant of a leap, a common frog springs clear of shallow marsh water, hind legs still coiled and front toes reaching forward. Its speckled ochre back gleams with beads of water, each droplet flicked on in a bright dab of white against warm brown skin. Beneath it the surface opens into spreading rings and a burst of spray, and the pale reflection of the animal wavers in the shallows. Reeds and dry grasses stand behind in soft ochre, olive and pewter, painted loosely so that nothing competes with the moment. The whole picture holds its breath for a fraction of a second, alive with the energy of wild water.
The subject is native wetland life observed closely and honestly. Try it in a snug or reading corner above a low chest, in an entrance hall facing the door, or in a garden room where it answers the view outside. Its earth tones settle easily against taupe walls, walnut and dark metal, and warm up beside wool throws, jute and stone-coloured ceramics.
