Vintage Landscape Painting
In the manner of the Old Masters, this valley opens gradually from a shadowed foreground of scrub and bare earth towards a chain of slate-blue mountains softened by distance. A tall tree leans in from the right edge, its ochre foliage catching the last of the sun, while a narrow track winds past dark thickets towards a small hilltop settlement and a silver lake far beyond. The sky occupies the upper third with heaped cloud lit from behind in cream and amber, and the whole scene carries the mellow, slightly darkened varnish tone of a painting several centuries old. There is a deep quiet in it, the stillness of open country seen long before roads and machines ever arrived.
The theme is the classical pastoral landscape, ordered and unhurried. It belongs above a mantelpiece in a sitting room, or on the end wall of a panelled dining room where lamplight will bring out the gold in the leaves. Its aged greens, ochres and slate blues harmonise with dark walnut, deep green paintwork, worn leather and antique brass fittings. A quiet valley that lends any room the gravity of an older century.
