Two walls of limestone cliff rise on either side of this watercolour, closing in on a narrow channel of deep indigo water where a single white sailing boat drifts, tiny against the rock. The washes are loose and wet, letting cobalt bleed into slate grey and pale ochre so that the stone seems half dissolved in sea mist. Light gathers at the far end of the passage in a haze of cream and soft yellow, drawing the eye through the gorge towards the open water beyond. Ripples in the foreground are suggested with quick horizontal strokes and a few sparks of untouched white paper. The scale of it is humbling: one small sail, held between cliffs that have stood unchanged for millennia.
The subject is solitude and the pull of an unknown passage. It reads well in a dining room, hung on the long wall the table runs beside, and equally well in a home office where a wide view helps the mind travel. The indigo and stone tones sit easily with charcoal upholstery, brushed steel and pale wood floors, and add real depth to a room dressed mainly in grey. Adventure held in a few transparent washes.
