Painted in the manner of the old masters, this pastoral view opens on a broad valley seen between tall trees on the left and a rocky bluff on the right, where a slender waterfall spills into a pool below. Golden fields and hedgerows recede towards a cluster of small classical buildings, then to blue foothills and a range of snow-tipped peaks catching the sun. Great cumulus clouds pile up in a soft turquoise sky, their edges lit warm ivory, while glazed layers of olive, bronze and umber give the foliage a deep, burnished glow. Every distance is measured out with such care that the eye wanders slowly from the shaded foreground to the far mountains.
The theme is the classical ideal of harmony between people and countryside, a landscape at peace with itself. It looks handsome over a fireplace in a drawing room, or facing the door in a wide entrance hall where its depth can be admired from a few steps back. Aged golds, mossy greens and hazy blues sit naturally with grey upholstery, dark painted walls, herringbone floors and antique brass.
