Stone cottages with slate roofs cling to the headland in this upright coastal scene, looking down on a narrow inlet where a white sailboat rests quietly at anchor. The water is a clear turquoise streaked with pale reflections, and a second wooden boat drifts near the quay below the houses, close enough to hear voices. Rough granite boulders fill the lower third of the composition, softened by clumps of purple thistle and wind-bitten green scrub. Thick, visible strokes of oil build up the rock and the foliage, while the sky above breaks into fast-moving cloud lit from behind.
