Two smaller heads dip below and to the side, their petals suggested by quick wet strokes that fray softly at the edges. Green stems and leaves rise through the middle in fresh sap tones, while cobalt and turquoise pigment pools behind the flowers and runs down in visible drips. Flicks of yellow and blue scatter across the pale ground, left by a brush shaken with deliberate freedom. The looseness makes the bouquet feel picked minutes ago and set down while still wet.
Its subject is high summer at its most generous, warmth held in the gold of the petals and coolness in the blue behind them.
