Three giraffes have squeezed themselves into an old roll-top tub, their necks rising out of a bank of white foam while one lets a thin stream of water fall from its mouth. Steam and early light pour through the tall paned window behind them, backlighting the whole scene in soft gold and blurring the potted greenery standing at either side. Their spotted coats glow tawny against the pale ceramic rim and the milky, bubbling water, and a brass tap catches a small highlight on the right. Everything is rendered with photographic realism, which makes the absurdity of the situation all the funnier. There is real mischief in it, three friends caught mid-conversation in a bath far too small for them.
The theme is playful surrealism, animals borrowing our most ordinary domestic ritual.
